Mgr. Michal Ščepán, PhD. is a Slovak musicologist. He studied at the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava, as one of the last students of Professor Ľubomír Chalupka. He continued his studies at the Institute of Musicology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), where he earned his PhD with a dissertation titled Tadeáš Salva, život dielo (Tadeáš Salva: Life and Work, supervised by Jana Lengová). Since 2017, he has been working in the Department of Systematic Musicology at the Institute of Musicology of the SAS. Since 2018, he has been the head of this department, a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute, and currently also serves as deputy director.

 

In his research work, he applies an interdisciplinary approach combining methods of music historiography and music theory. He specializes in 20th-century music, focusing on the history of Slovak music and musical culture in Slovakia. He pays particular attention to the works of Slovak composers from the second half of the 20th century, analyzing them from stylistic and music-analytical perspectives, and placing them within the broader context of European music development.
