Prof. PhDr. Hana Urbancová, DrSc. is a Slovak musicologist, ethnomusicologist, editor, and university professor. Since the early 1990s, she has been engaged in fundamental research on traditional song culture in Slovakia, comparative studies within Central Europe, the music of ethnic minorities, historical sources of folk music, and the theory and history of ethnomusicology. Since 2009, she has served as the Director of the Institute of Musicology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
She is a member of several professional organizations and associations, including the Slovak Musicological Society, the Ethnographic Society of Slovakia at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Society of Authors of Scientific and Professional Literature, the International Council for Traditional Music, the Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore, and the Society for Ethnomusicology. She also serves on various academic and university committees and editorial boards (such as Slovac music, Musicologica Istropolitana, and Rocznik Muzykologiczny). Between 2009 and 2014, she was a member of the Assembly of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and from 2014 to 2018, a member of the Humanities Council of the Slovak Research and Development Agency (APVV).
She completed short-term research stays in Budapest (1993), Warsaw (1994, 2012), and Zagreb (1995). She has delivered lectures at international scholarly events in Prague (1993), Vienna (1994, 2007), Cieszyn, Poland (1994), Brno (1995, 2004, 2006, 2007), Békéscsaba (1996), Ljubljana (2000, 2001), Münster (2002), Graz – Seggau (2004), Kyiv (2005), New York (2008), Stockholm (2008), and Kutná Hora (2008).
She has been actively involved in teaching at the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava; at the Department of Music Education, Faculty of Education, Comenius University in Bratislava; and at the Department of Dance Creation, Faculty of Music and Dance, Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava.
She has mentored numerous students and regularly supervises and reviews graduate theses. She frequently participates in academic conferences and publishes in professional journals.
For her scientific contributions to Slovak ethnomusicology, she has received several awards.
