Missa in C maior

Missa in C major has been described by several of Mikuláš Moyzes’s biographers as his most significant composition from the Austro-Hungarian period. Its composition is associated with the birth of his first son, Alexander Moyzes. During the composer’s lifetime, it was among his most frequently performed works and became one of the most widely known Slovak compositions.

The work sets the Ordinary of the Mass as a traditional six-movement cycle, with its artistic focus on an expertly crafted four-part choral texture employing sophisticated counterpoint and a purposeful variety of contrasting textures. The choir is accompanied throughout by the organ, whose independent role is so substantial that the Mass could arguably be performed even without the orchestral accompaniment. The orchestra consists of two clarinets, two horns, timpani, strings, and organ.
