Lukáš Borzík

Lukáš Borzík is a Slovak composer, pedagogue, sound engineer, music director, and cultural organiser. He belongs to a significant generation of Slovak composers who emerged at the beginning of the 21st century. He teaches composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he contributes to the artistic and professional development of a new generation of composers. Since 2022, he has served as President of the Association of Slovak Composers, is Vice-Chairman of the Music Fund Council, and in 2024 founded and became President of Ars Bivium, a platform dedicated to the documentation, publication, and international promotion of contemporary Slovak music.

He is a laureate of several national and international composition competitions and the recipient of major awards, including the Ján Levoslav Bella Prize for Missa da pacem, as well as Radio_Head Awards for the albums Slovo and Signum Magnum. He is the author of seven profile albums. His output unfolds across a broad expressive spectrum, with a strong emphasis on large-scale orchestral forms—symphonies, concertos, and symphonic works—which constitute one of the central trajectories of his compositional work. These works are regularly performed in Slovakia and abroad by leading soloists, chamber ensembles, choirs, and symphony orchestras.

Alongside his orchestral writing, a significant part of his oeuvre is devoted to vocal, choral, and spiritually oriented music. Borzík has developed an individual musical language based on a synthesis of modal, tonal, extended-tonal, bitonal, atonal, twelve-tone, and spectral principles, which he understands as interconnected layers of a unified expressive field. His musical poetics stem from a conviction about the unity of the intellectual and spiritual dimensions of art, drawing inspiration from theology, philosophy, poetry, the natural sciences, architecture, and visual arts.

His works focus on the tension between form and meaning, structural precision and spiritual expression, often engaging with sacred and philosophical themes, questions of transcendence, and the existential dimension of musical discourse.

Alongside his compositional work, he is deeply engaged in cultural infrastructure and production. Through pedagogical, organisational, publishing, and editorial activities, he supports the creation of new works, collaboration between composers and performers, and the systematic presentation of Slovak contemporary music in an international context.
