In the field of research he focused on the history of music, history of Czecho-Slovak musical relationships, musical pedagogy and receptive musical education.
Jozef Tvrdoň’s publications comprise musico-theoretical textbooks and scripts, along with popularising works such as Hudba okolo nás (Music Around Us, 1962). He is the author of a number of musico-educational programmes broadcast by Czechoslovak Radio in Bratislava and TV programmes.
