After 1936, when Stalin accused Dmitri Shostakovich of "bourgeois formalism," the Russian composer’s life turned into a constant fear for his own existence. His works took on a tragic tone, overwhelming expressivity, and a painful sarcasm. These emotional states also permeated his greatest concertante works, including the Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor. The Polish composer of Jewish origin, Mieczysław Weinberg, was forced to emigrate to Moscow after the Nazi occupation of Poland. There, he formed a close personal and professional bond with Dmitri Shostakovich, and with his compositions, he rivaled the artistic quality of his world-renowned mentor.
