Although Charles Nicolas Bochsa faced charges of embezzlement in France, he nevertheless shone abroad as a composer and educator in the field of harp performance and literature. Franz Schubert was the first composer to highlight the darker aspects of human existence in his music; this is especially evident in his finest songs and expressive piano works in the spirit of the nocturne. The Englishman Elias Parish Alvars was a student of Charles Nicolas Bochsa and presented himself as his exemplary successor. His harp technique inspired not only harpists but also musicians more broadly. Johann Strauss’s waltzes fascinate people around the world; Argentine composer and opera conductor Lucio Bruno-Videla paid tribute to them in his imaginative potpourri. Gustav Mahler’s Adagietto belongs to the category of "heavenly music," and in its harp arrangement, it takes on an even more transcendent character. One of the most outstanding figures in contemporary harp composition and performance is Monika Stadler, who combines technical brilliance with an intriguing crossover style where classical music meets jazz, world music, and sonic experimentation.
